Qliner

Sectie Applications

We and our clients have deployed the Qliner in many types of rivers. Let is be small or large, wild or calm, deep or shallow. An interesting aspect of rivers is their changes, from small to large, shallow to deep and calm to wild, sometimes unexpected. You like instruments that work in all these conditions and in all of your rivers. On this page you find examples of Qliner measurements in different types of rivers.

Measurements in flood conditions.
During flood you want to measure safily, quicky and reliably. Time is limited, weather is generally bad and measurement conditions are difficult due to high flow velocities, unsteady water surface and high sediment load. The Qliner is a good tool in these difficult conditions because due to the high flow velocities the measurement times are short. On top of that the boat is very stable in the water. Below you find two applications in Germany in a wild river in Munchen and during the flood of summer 2005.

- Flood in Southern Germany

Mountain Rivers
The bed of mountain rivers is generally rocky which leads to surface waves. Please read about some experiment in the Alpes.

A river with vegetation
Acoustics and vegetation are not close friends. The Qliner can deal with vegetation however. Due to the simple measurement principle the results can still be very good when something goes wrong during the campaign. In the next paper you can read about an extreme amount of vegetation in Denmark.

- Taken by surprise

Small streams
The discharge is small in small streams. But still, the Qliner can be used in discharge far below 1 m3/s, as is shown in the next paper

- Qliner and EasyV discharge measurements in the Beekloop stream

Big rivers
From now on, flow and discharge measurements on big rivers can be really easy. Due to the larger water depth the Qliner can measure accurate profiles in a short time, e.g. 10 to 20 s. On the river Rhine in Koblenz we have shown that in a large experiment.

Deeper rivers with clear water are not a problem either. Please read how we combined two Qliner measurements on a big bridge;

  • Deployment in a wild river
  • Narrow to medium width rivers (3-30 meters)
  • Fast moving streams like in the mountains.
  • Read more about this in this thrilling novel 'Partying with the Qliner in the Alps'.
  • Channels with steep walls. Since the Qliner has all beams in single plane, it can measure very close to the sides.
  • Calibration or checking of the capacity of large pumps.
  • Replacement of expensive moving boat ADP's.
