Qliner
TFlood in Southern Germany
Sicco Kamminga - August 2005 May 2004
It is nice when you can actually make good measurement during flood conditions. We were giving a training in Southern Germany when the flood came. Of course we took the chance to make a few measurements. The river is the Wertach, which flows from the Alpes into the Lech river and then into the river Danube. During the measurements the river was brown of sediment and there are a lot of surface waves, Fig 1.

Figure 1: the Qliner deployed from a bridge during flood in the river Wertach. The Qliner is kept in place using a small weight just visible in front of the boat.

The measured discharge is 54.2 m3/s ( +/- 1.0 m3/s), Fig 3. This result is obtained in 11 minutes.

Figure 3: Results of the Qliner measurement in Qliner Review. The graph on the lower left side shows the depth profile in segments. Going upward on the left the discharge, specific discharge and flow velocity are shown. Lower right corner shows general result. The graph on the right shows a velocity profile with in red measured values and in blue an exponential profile. Upper right part shows results of the 6th vertical
